Gakenke station has 2,685 registered farmer members, spread over 22 hills in Gatare commune, Kayanza province. These are organized in groups of 30 people, headed by a producer leader to facilitate communication and organization with the washing station. The farmers typically have an average of 250 trees. Each tree only produces around 3 pounds of ripe coffee cherries, which after processing only results in about half a pound of green coffee per tree. Almost all of the coffee growing in Burundi is Red Bourbon that was originally planted about 50 years ago. Our exporting partner facilitates a program that helps producers obtain seedlings below market cost in order to renovate their aging trees in order to boost productivity. This is our first year working with Gakenke Station after visiting during the 2019 harvest season.
