Welcome to Sightglass Los Angeles

Welcome to Sightglass Los Angeles

After ten years as an exclusively San Francisco company, we’re opening the doors of our first Los Angeles flagship in Hollywood’s emerging Sycamore Media District.

Let’s take a tour…

The Space

As with all of our stores, Sycamore is the sum of multiple collaborations and custom details made just for this particular location. Working closely with Seth Boor (Boor Projects), the architect who helped breathe life into the visions for all of our San Francisco locations, we conjured a space that is both visually unique and spatially familiar. The result? A sprawling 12,300 square foot space, recalling the grandeur of all-day European cafés.

A welcoming destination for everyday occasions, our Sycamore flagship is home to a coffee bar, full-service kitchen, and coffee roastery, as well as a public education and wholesale resource center. The interior accommodates up to 150 guests, while a sun-drenched patio introduces our first dedicated outdoor space.

Our inspiration for the design and color palette came from a number of sources. We looked at historic libraries with vast common areas, old Hollywood in the era of Gene Tierney, the sculptural furniture design of Mario Bellini, and the stunning interior of Adolf Loos’ Café Museum in Vienna.

Vibrant reds and aquatic greens, both saturated and subdued, set a chromatic mood. Crimson stained concrete floors enliven the main entrance, drawing guests in toward a custom, hand-patinated copper clad bar and casework filled with an abundance of pastry and Roman-style pizza. Large, theatrical lighting pays homage to the Golden Gate Bridge’s iconic fixtures and our San Francisco hometown. Long, deep library tables with reading lights make up the bulk of the interior seating, with study carrel-style booths showcasing views into the roastery.

Throughout Spring, the patio will become ensconced in greenery and soft scents. You’ll find Plumeria peeking out with tropical pops of color, while lush flowering vines inch their way across exposed brick, or trail down from ledges. Papaya, fig and citrus trees will create shaded nooks where you can while away a sunny afternoon with a good book or a friend. The space will evolve into a dreamy paradise of foliage and florals come Fall, a subtle celebration of the temperate SoCal climate.

The Coffee

Like all of our coffee bars, our coffee program at Sycamore encourages a connection to each cup, whether an individually prepared V60 pour-over, cold coffee on tap, or a classic latte. Espresso-based drinks create the foundation of the menu, while a rotating cast of single-origin offerings, some of which will be specific to Sycamore, will offer guests a unique and seasonally changing coffee experience.

With education at its heart, our multi-use lab serves as a home base for our Sourcing, Quality Control, Wholesale partnerships and Public Education. Wholesale partners and coffee lovers alike will be given an immersive introduction to our coffee, sourcing, and roasting practices. With a program comprised of hands-on, sensory-driven courses, participants can taste through our menu of offerings, learn to brew coffee with confidence, or even get a behind-the-scenes look at our roastery operations.

The Food

Sycamore will also be our first foray into a seasonal, market-driven culinary program. Executive Chef/Culinary Director Brett Cooper (formerly of the Michelin-starred Aster and iconic Outerlands in SF) oversees the vision for inventive, seasonal offerings that beautifully complement the coffee experience. Casual breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed within the café or to-go, with Happy Hour and dinner service coming in April 2020.

The menu transitions from morning dishes, such as citrus-cured salmon on a house-made sourdough bagel and duck confit hash, to diverse all-day fare including heirloom grain bowls, brandade croquettes, slow-cooked lamb shoulder pressé and maitake mushroom tempura with miso aioli. Specialty Roman and Sicilian-inspired pizza can be enjoyed by the slice, freshly baked in our custom-built, Italian-designed pizza oven.

If you’re looking for a more traditional companion for your coffee, you’ll find row upon row of neatly stacked, sweet and savory confections from James Beard-nominated pastry chef Jillian Bartolome. Our cases will showcase everything from spam & cheese croissants and mini challah to madeleines and lavender shortbread made fresh every 90 minutes.

We hope to see you in our new neighborhood soon!
