While components and flavors change seasonally, our flagship Owl's Howl Espresso invariably delivers a balanced, and refined espresso experience. It’s simple: excellent coffee depends on the quality and freshness of green coffee. Like any other fresh crop, coffee eventually stales, losing vibrancy, complexity and sweetness.

From Coffee Review (evaluated as Espresso):

"Crisply chocolaty, sweet and nutty. Baking chocolate, kumquat, cashew, orange zest, fresh oak in aroma and cup. Crisp, velvety-smooth mouthfeel. Briskly sweet-tart finish with fresh oak undertones. In cappuccino format, baking chocolate blooms and commingles with sweet cashew notes. A friendly, easygoing espresso, especially chocolaty in cappuccino format."

    Rating: 91/100

Our Owl's Howl espresso is a medium roast. It's a bright and fruity espresso with a blend of chocolate, fruit and balanced acidity.

Here's the basic espresso recipe that we use in all of our shops:

Dose: 18-20g of freshly ground espresso

    Yield: 28-32g of brewed espresso

    Time: 28-32 seconds of extraction

Age: 7-14 days after roast, when our espresso tastes best.

    Brewing Temp: 200-205F

We would recommend using a lighter dose for fresher coffee (18g for 7 days) and a heavier dose for older coffee (20g for 14 days). This is a general rule, so feel free to play around with it. Most importantly, trust your taste buds and take notes along the way.

      BEST COFFEE

I was introduced to this brand/blend by a friend, and I cannot go back to a different brand. My mornings cannot be any happier thanks to Sightglass. Been using owl's howl for years and love them! It goes perfect with my machine.

      Love this coffee

My husband and I have always enjoyed Owl's Howl coffee from Sight Glass at our favorite brunch place, Johnston's Saltbox. We finally decided to ask them what coffee they served and went ahead bought it to brew at home. Best decision! This organic coffee is smooth andrich in flavor, with hints of stone fuit, orange peel, and cocoa nibs. If you are one who appreciate high quality coffee, I highly recommend this brand.

      My Favorite Espresso

I've tried many and this remains my favorite. You get a stone fruit end to the taste that sweetens it up and makes it delicious with milk.

      Best Espresso Bean

Owl's Howl is hands down the best espresso bean that I have found. The flavor is rich and complex, but not at all bitter or burnt tasting. I buy 5lb bags of beans and grind immediately before brewing.

    FAQ

    Is Sightglass coffee organic?

Most of the coffee that we source annually is certified Organic. These coffees go into classic blends like Blueboon, Toketee, Owl's Howl, Crown Point, and Hunky Dory. On our single origin menu, Worka Chelbessa from the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia is certified Organic. We purchase other single origin coffees yearly with Organic certifications but are often sold as conventional coffees.

What are the brewing instructions for espresso? What is the recommended brewing temperature and extraction time/ratio?

Here's the basic espresso recipe that we use in all of our shops:

Dose: 18-20g of freshly ground espresso

    Yield: 28-32g of brewed espresso

How many cups of coffee are in a bag?

Using the recipe that we use in-store, each 12oz bag makes 17 cups of coffee - just the right amount for one person to use in two weeks or for a pair of coffee drinkers to enjoy in a week.

Each 2LB bag makes 45 cups of coffee - just the right amount for one person to use in 3 weeks for two people

Each 5LB bag makes 113 cups of coffee - just the right amount for one person to use in 8 weeks for two people

Is Owl's Howl a dark, medium or light roast?

Our Owl's Howl espresso is medium roast. It's a bright and fruity espresso with a blend of chocolate, fruit and balanced acidity.

Compared to other espressos, it's a good deal lighter than most other roasters.

How long does Sightglass coffee stay fresh?

Sightglass coffee tastes best up to six weeks after the roast date printed on the back of the sealed bag. Once opened, we recommend you use the coffee within two weeks for optimal freshness. Coffee will taste best when ground immediately before brewing.
